gazebos on Toton park

Following on from the successful "Beating of the Bounds" walk in 2004, which was part of The Assumption's Golden Jubilee Celebrations, we decided to organise another Parish walk.

So it was that on a hot summer's day, several groups of walkers set off from Bramcote Hills park to complete a circular walk.

There were two routes to choose from one "wheelchair- and buggy-friendly" route of three miles and a slightly hillier route of 6 miles. On returning to the park, we all enjoyed a picnic together in the lovely summer weather, with cakes and drinks laid on for us by a team of willing ladies.

relaxing in the park

Our first and foremost reason for doing this walk was for fun, as a joint Parish event, a chance to get to know each other a little better. However, as with the Jubilee walk, we aimed to make a little sponsorship money to support Across Jumbulance, a charitable organisation which runs specially fitted Ambulance-coaches, taking the very sick and disabled to Lourdes.

another leafy path

Fr Kevin has been on Pilgrimage with Across as Chaplain a few times and some of our congregation had been as VIPs, for example the 2005 Pilgrimage.

The amount raised will be publicised as soon as it is available.

A lonely marshall

Once again, the 66 walkers were indebted to the organisers, marshalls and the refreshments team, and of course, the Control Team who held the fort under the gazebos, greeting everyone warmly on our return with very welcome refreshments and a certificate of achievement!

This was a great event for Parish community building; let's hope we do it yet again!

On a sad note, we have to report that the portaloo hired by our parishes especially for the Parish Walk and picnic was subject to an arson attack in the park on the Sunday evening. The police are investigating, but in the meantime, we have a staggeringly high bill to pay to the portaloo hire company!
